wisdom of the ages

the old italian said,

when mussolini held power

I yelled duci like a fool

when the nazis took over

I hated the jews too

when the u.s. pushed them out

I was all red, white and blue

from catch 22

and so it shall be

In the last years of my life

I’ll wear my maga hat proudly

to avoid any strife

and welcome my ignorance

like a long lost soul

and pretend i’m a believer

wherever i go

 freedom

I held freedom in my hand

like a orb it brightly shone

in the middle of nowhere

I stood cold and alone

then I stepped forward

and the orb vanished

but when I stepped back

it reappeared

so there I was, free at last,

desolate and so alone

and all that time

the orb brightly shone

 like a boogeyman
(haiku)

another neighbor
has come down with the virus
that makes a dozen

and I’m reluctant
to even go to the store
to buy groceries

least of all mingle
for who knows what is lurking
within every cough

-

it’s like it’s out there
waiting to put asunder
every well laid plan

 almost a million dead
(haiku)

a deadly virus
hovers everywhere we go
but few give a shit

people are dying
but it is the other guy
until it is them

then they say real low
i should’ve got vaccinated
or wore my dumb mask

but no one hears them
cuz the thing about this thing
is you die alone

-

our callous nation
undisciplined and stupid
pretends it’s not real

alone is a good thing
(haiku)

in my neighborhood
most people have opinions
i can’t bear to hear

in my neighborhood
everyone likes to complain
about everything

in my neighborhood
people live pretty good lives
but no one knows it

in my neighborhood
it seems that nine out of ten
are republicans

in my neighborhood
it’s best to just be alone
and talk to no one

 same old problem
(tanka)

the whole idea
that everything should go on
as it was before

the pandemic became fact
perpetuates the problem

-

by the time we are
all fully vaccinated
covid will mutate

into a worst variant
resistant to the vaccine

winding down
(haiku)

time’s going faster
and most everything i see
i have seen before

and all these issues
i’m suppose to care about
don’t really matter

when i consider
the tiny part mankind plays
in the universe

-

and i probably
won’t be alive when it all
crumbles to pieces
